Hotels, Guest accommodation & Self Catering in Barnard Castle
Barnard Castle is a historic market town on the north bank of the River Tees. It is named after the medieval castle, now cared for by English Heritage, around which it grew up. The town has a number of antique shops and the High Street has many independent shops. For food lovers, locally-produced food can be found in many of the shops and at the excellent monthly farmers’ market. There are also a number of good restaurants, cafes and pubs. The Bowes Museum has a collection of European fine and decorative arts, housed in a 19th-century French-style chateau. Its most famous exhibit is the 18th-century Silver Swan automaton. The Witham Arts Centre provides an events programme of music, theatre, film and comedy. Eggleston Hall Gardens is a hidden gem for garden and plant lovers. From the town, take a walk along the river into the beautiful Teesdale countryside, which inspired Walter Scott’s epic poem Rokeby.
