Town Information

South Shields is a coastal town at the mouth of the River Tyne, about 4.84 miles (7.79 km) from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Its heritage lies in shipbuilding and seafaring and it has a vibrant town centre with an excellent selection of shops and a popular market. Visit South Shields Museum, Haven Point on the seafront, Marine Parks, Souter Lighthouse (the world's first electric lighthouse), Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, Harton Quays Park, Arbeia Roman Fort (part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site) or St Paul's Church and Monastic Site. The Word (National Centre for the Written Word), is a major new cultural attraction which will attract many visitors. South Shields also boasts Littlehaven Beach which offers water sports and fishing facilities, and Sandhaven Beach which is a long golden sandy beach backed by rolling sand dunes.
