Town Information

Gretna is a town in Dumfries and Galloway, in the south of Scotland on the A74(M) road, near the border and the mouth of the River Esk. Gretna was built from scratch as a planned township during the First World War, to house workers from the huge munitions factories developed in the area. Close by Gretna Green is, of course, famous for being the marriage capital of the UK.

Every year over 4,000 weddings take place in Gretna and Gretna Green, which amounts to around one in eight of all weddings that take place in Scotland. Historically it was to Gretna Green that young runaway couples eloped so that they could be married, due to more relaxed marriage laws in Scotland. Gretna Greens Famous Blacksmiths Shop, where couples have come to marry since 1754, is still here.

Both locations have shopping and eating out facilities. On the shopping front, the Gretna Gateway Outlet Village provides a major attraction in its own right. Gretna is perfectly situated to explore the nearby attractions in Dumfries and Galloway or even across the border into Carlisle, along Hadrians Wall and the Lake District.
