Monmouth is the historic county town of Monmouthshire in Wales, within 2 miles of the border with England. The town is a popular tourist centre and market town at the heart of the Wye Valley. Monmouth has a variety of both national and independent shops. It also has many independent cafes, pubs and restaurants. Church Street, a cobbled pedestrianised street, contains craft shops, a book shop, greengrocer, coffee shops and restaurants. A regular market takes place close to the Monnow Bridge. The town's small traditional theatre and cinema, the Savoy Theatre is believed to be the oldest working theatre in Wales. Monmouth Museum is home to a large collection of Admiral Horatio Nelson artefacts. The Monmouthshire Show is held in July and is the largest 1-day agricultural show in Wales. The Monmouth Festival is a free 9-day music festival and is one of the largest free music festivals in Europe. The town also holds a country music and women’s festival and an annual regatta is held each May.
