Longtown is a small town on the River Esk, not far from the Anglo-Scottish border just 3 miles from Gretna Green, 6 miles from Carlisle and is close to the site where the Battle of Solway Moss was fought in 1542. On the north bank of the River Esk is the site of the largest sheep market in England. Cattle are also auctioned here. A little over two miles to the north, on the west bank of the River Esk, Kirkandrews Tower is an isolated and well-preserved 16th century peel tower. Dr Robert Graham laid out the town with the wide tree-lined streets you see today.
