Millom is a bustling market town with plenty of facilities, located on the north shore of the River Duddon estuary, below Black Combe, which stands 1,970 feet (600 metres) above sea level. This fell forms a panoramic viewing platform of the south-west Lake District area and views of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland on a clear day. In the 18th-century, Millom was a centre for iron ore mining. Although the industry has long since gone, its heritage is recalled in the excellent local museum and by a commemorative statue in the town. Parts of the old mines are now nature reserves. Hodbarrow Nature Reserve is owned by the RSPB and is located to the south of the town. Millom Iron Works Local Nature Reserve is located to the east. The 20th-century writer and poet Norman Nicholson lived in Millom and his life is the subject of an exhibition in the Millom Folk Museum. The ancient Holy Trinity Church, with its fish window, is an interesting attraction. Beside the Holy Trinity church are the remains of Millom Castle. Nearby Haverigg has some fine beaches.
