Inveraray is nestled on the western shore of Loch Fyne. It is a former royal burgh, the traditional county town of Argyll, and ancestral home to the Duke of Argyll. Inveraray is a gateway to the Highlands and Islands and provides an excellent base for touring. Established in 1745 by the 3rd Duke of Argyll, head of the powerful Clan Campbell, the town has much Georgian architecture. Key buildings include the neoclassical church, and Inveraray Jail and Courthouse, which is now an award-winning museum. Inveraray Castle remains the family home of the Dukes of Argyll. The castle is set in extensive grounds which contain a number of marked walks. Other attractions include the Celtic Inveraray Cross and the Bell Tower, which is open to the public. The town has a golf course and outdoor activities are available at Argyll Adventure. Close by is the Argyll Folk Museum at Auchindrain, Crarae Gardens and Kilmartin Glen.
