Chagford is a friendly market town in Devon, on the north-eastern edge of Dartmoor. This former tin-mining town is found on the edge of a wooded hillside and has been previously voted the best place to live in the British countryside. It is a town which is known as The Jewel of Dartmoor, and hosts the only annual auction of Dartmoor ponies. It is a charming place, with lots of stone cottages and the 15th century Church of St Michael. Around the picturesque Square and pepper pot market house, the town has more than 25 shops, 4 pubs, 3 restaurants and 3 churches. Not far from the town is Gidleigh Park, Michael Caines renowned restaurant which has two Michelin stars. Chagford has an open-air swimming pool, solar-powered and fed by the River Teign, which opens from May to September. The town it has its renowned film festival in September, and as well as all this, there are many literary links and a wealth of Dartmoor legend. There is wonderful walking all around or visit Fernworthy Lake for a spot of fishing. Stone Lane Gardens and Spinsters Rock are popular attractions and 3 miles from the town is Castle Drogo.
