Ilfracombe is a thriving seaside resort with a small harbour residing on the North Devon coast. It is still a working fishing port and you will be able to sample many of the local seafood delights in local restaurants. The landmark of Hillsborough Hill dominates the harbour and was the site of an Iron age settlement. The town also lies on the world-famous South-West Coastal Path. With a rich heritage and forward-looking approach, Ilfracombe is a must-see destination. It is a very friendly town where you will find a bustling centre full of beautiful 19th century architecture, independent shops, a cinema, night club, cafes, takeaways, pubs and restaurants; not to mention the scrumptious Walkers Chocolate Imporium! The town is ideally located for superb beaches and picturesque scenery and you will find plentiful opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing, horse riding, a range of watersports and even a spot of clay pigeon shooting.
Attractions here are plentiful, and include the Damien Hurst thought-provoking statue Verity which stands tall at 20 metres overlooking the harbour. There is also the award-winning Ilfracombe Aquarium, the unique Tunnels Beaches (a network of hand-carved tunnels leading to unique sheltered beaches and a tidal Victorian bathing pool), eight local galleries, Ilfracombe Museum, Larkstone Leisure Park, Hele Cornmill and Chambercombe Manor. There are a host of events and festivals throughout the year in Ilfracombe, many based on the quayside at the historic harbour and at the prestigious architectural award-winning Landmark Theatre on the seafront. These celebrations include six carnivals, a May Day celebration; Ilfracombe Victorian Celebration, a week-long event in June to celebrate a time of the town's prosperity; a large street carnival procession during August; the Sea Ilfracombe festival in September and the Lighting of the Lights in November. There is also a Christmas celebration. There is something here for everyone.
