Charmouth is a coastal village overlooking Lyme Bay where Regency houses elegantly line the steep streets. It lies among steep hills and is sited on a sloping site to the west of the River Char, close to its mouth at the English Channel. Golden Cap, the highest cliff on the south coast of England is 2.5 miles to the east. This traditional village is situated at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast, an ancient coastline of dramatic cliffs, fossils and beautiful scenery. The beach at Charmouth is world renowned for its abundance of fossilised remains, and as such, attracts many enthusiastic fossil hunters. The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, situated on the sea front, hosts regular walks, talks and fossil hunting expeditions throughout the year and is incredibly popular. There are shops by the beach and on the main street, including a fossil shop, cafes, butcher, baker and post office.
