Wareham is a charming riverside market town with a rich history, located on the River Frome approximately 8 miles from Poole in the Dorset countryside. Wareham is one of the few remaining Saxon walled towns in England. Walk around the walls and visit the town museum to find out more, including discovering the connection between Wareham and Lawrence of Arabia! The town is an excellent place to explore, with plenty of interesting shops and loads of good eateries as well as 8 pubs. The Quay is a popular destination where there is a weekly Saturday markets and other activities, including boat trips down the river. Nearby attractions include the Jurassic Coast, Brownsea Island, Corfe Castle, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and the county town of Dorchester. Visit the Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre, a 65-acre park, home to the stars of TV’s ‘Monkey Life and Monkey Business, which provides sanctuary for rescued and endangered primates from around the world. The Tank Museum at Bovington is a great day out, as well as the Purbeck Mineral and Mining Museum (PMMM) in between Wareham and Corfe Castle, which is dedicated to the history of Purbeck Ball Clay mining, the industrial heritage of Purbeck and the Purbeck narrow gauge railways. The villages of Wool, Moreton and West Lulworth are close and worth having a stroll round, or visit the ghost village of Tyneham where time stopped in 1943.
