Beamish, previously named Pit Hill, is a charming village in County Durham situated to the north-east of Stanley. The village is contained within Hell Hole Wood, an ancient woodland site which is a popular place to visit, where you can see red squirrels and explore its network of footpaths. The village is home to Beamish Museum, an open-air museum seeking to replicate a northern town of the early 20th century. The village’s main public house is the Shepherd and Shepherdess, decorated with two life-sized painted lead figures of a shepherd and a shepherdess; located near the Beamish Museum entrance. North-west Beamish lies in the conservation area of Beamish Burn. To the north of the village, Pockerley Manor preserves a rare, although altered, example of a Peel Tower (small fortified keep / tower house), probably dating from the 15th century with later alterations and additions.
