Wigton is a market town in Cumbria, it lies just outside the Lake District in the borough of Allerdale. It is at the centre of the Solway Plain, between the Caldbeck Fells and the Solway coast. Served by Wigton railway station on the Cumbrian Coast Line, and the A596 road to Workington. The triangular market place was the centre of the medieval town of Wigton, on this site now stands the memorial fountain, an elaborate 19th Century fountain erected in 1872 by George Moore of Whitehall in Mealsgate, built of granite, and featuring four fine bronze reliefs. Many of the charming buildings around the market place are of Georgian style, and the upper storeys have altered little.
