Town Information

Ashburton is a small town on the southern edge of Dartmoor National park in the spectacular county of Devon. It is a former stannary, or tin mining, town with a very rich history. It has a bustling marketplace with many interesting features and buildings to explore. Ashburton has had a reputation for its excellent pubs, inns and coaching houses for hundreds of years. Many of these still exist today along with a good selection of tearooms, cafes, restaurants and food shops where you will meet the friendly locals and sample some delicious Devon produce! You could also visit the lovely antique shops, galleries, and book shops in the town. Full of historical interest and tradition, it hosts many events such as ale tasting and a bread weighing ceremony in July each year. Ashburton is also home to the Ashburton Cookery School which offers over 40 exciting courses and is one of the UK's top cookery schools offering inspirational courses led by professional chefs.

Ashburton is ideally located as a base for exploring the wonders and beauty of Dartmoor National Park with its 368 square miles of natural beauty and just perfect those interested in walking, cycling, canoeing, pony trekking, bird watching and fishing to name but a few activities.  Dartmoor is full of sites of Specific Scientific Interest, endangered birds and rare plants, and archaeological sites including burial chambers, stone circles with their legend and folklore. The town is mid-way between the historical cities of Exeter and Plymouth, and close to excellent transport links, making it the perfect base for your holiday.
