Hotels, Guest accommodation & Self Catering in Portland
The Isle of Portland is not actually an island and is reached from Chesil Beach and a causeway at Ferry Bridge. It is a huge block of limestone rock rising to a height of 400 feet above sea level in the north with great views across Chesil, Portland Harbour and Weymouth. Portland is situated approximately halfway along the Jurassic Coast, important for its geology and landforms. There are eight settlements on Portland, the largest being Fortuneswell and Easton. The famous Portland Stone quarried here has been used for many well-known buildings. These include St Paul’s Cathedral in London and the United Nations Building in New York. Many of the quarries here are owned by the crown, as Portland is a Royal Manor. Tout Quarry is open to the public and has its own display of outdoor sculptures. Portland is rugged and wild, and exquisitely beautiful. The area around Portland Bill, a magnificent place, is predominantly rough and jagged. Its lighthouse is a great visitor attraction and the views are simply stunning.
