Bala is a market town located within Snowdonia National Park which is quite simply, an area of stunning beauty, covering 823 square miles of wonderful and diverse landscapes, including the nearby mountains of Aran Fawddwy and Arenig Fawr. Bala is a paradise for outdoors enthusiasts with so many walking and cycling trails in the immediate area. Bala is also famous for its Afon Tryweryn river which provides opportunities for white-water canoeing, swimming, cycling and triathlons. The town has great shops, including the Best Butcher in Wales, and many cafes and even Michelin-starred restaurants to enjoy.
Bala is officially recognised as being a Walkers are Welcome town. Walk around the largest natural lake in Wales, at almost 4 miles long. The cycling is also really good and you can ride along its southern shore on the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway and there are also other waymarked trails for you to cycle. Cycle or drive over Bwlch y Groes, the highest road pass in Wales or take a scenic drive over the Berwyn mountains to Pistyll Rhaeadr, or Caerau Uchaf Gardens. Bala is filled with Welsh culture and history, with the new recently opened Mary Jones World at nearby Llanycil which tells the very inspirational story of the 15-year-old Mary Jones who walked 26 miles across the mountains.
