Fishguard is a small coastal town in Pembrokeshire in south-west Wales with boats bobbing in the harbour, wooded slopes and tranquil beaches, in a valley where the River Gwuan meets the sea. It is a fishing village with a short tidal quay. The town comprises two parts, the main town of Fishguard and Lower Fishguard known as Lower Town, thought to be the site of the original settlement from which the town has grown. The newer part of town has a range of high street and independently-owned shops, galleries, gift and antique shops and plenty of cafes, pubs and eateries. Fishguard is the main shopping town in North Pembrokeshire and has a market on Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays. There is also a gym, swimming pool and cinema. Visit The Last Invasion Tapestry at Fishguard Town Hall. For nature-lovers, Fishguard is rich with wild flowers, birds such as Northern Fulmar, European Stonechat and Great Cormorant and sea mammals such as seals, dolphins and porpoises. The town is an ideal base for a walking holiday as it is on the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path surrounded by the Coastal National Park. With the ferry port to Ireland in Fishguard, it is a popular stopping point for holidaymakers. Fishguard International Music Festival takes place in the summer.
