Broughton-in-Furness is a traditional small English market town on the south-western boundary of the Lake District National Park. It is situated on the Duddon Estuary and an ideal base for visiting the Lakes, the coast, the rugged beauty of the Duddon Valley and nearby hills, including the Dunnerdale Fells. The area is very popular with walkers, cyclists and climbers and also offers activities such as canoeing, kayaking, fishing and horse-riding. The focus of the town is the Georgian market square with its commemorative obelisk, erected to mark the jubilee of King George III in 1810. At the base stand a set of stocks and two slate fish slabs on which the catch of freshwater and seawater fish were historically displayed for sale on market days. Surrounding the square, 3-storey merchant houses share the space with the market hall which is now a tourist information centre, a pub, restaurant and a café. Close by, a post office, bank, butcher/greengrocers, small specialist shops, a petrol station and 3 more pubs provide a range of facilities.
