Dumfries is an ancient Scottish town with lots of fascinating history. It sits close to the Solway Firth near the mouth of the River Nith. Dumfries is nicknamed Queen of the South, and people from Dumfries are known colloquially as Doonhamers. It is the biggest town in south west Scotland, and was recently voted the happiest place to live in Scotland! Dumfries is home to lots of beautiful buildings, many constructed from characteristic red stone. There are plenty of high street and independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants in which you will find warm a Scottish welcome.
It was in Dumfries, at the Church of the Grey Friars in 1306, that Robert The Bruce murdered a rival for the Scottish crown, and went on to become King of Scotland. Greyfriars Church also overlooks a statue of Robert Burns who spent the last years of his life in Dumfries. Visitors can find Robert Burns House at 24 Burns Street, while his mausoleum is in St Michaels Churchyard. You will also find The Robert Burns Centre. Dumfries has other excellent museums; Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura and the Old Bridge House Museum, as well as the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum. A number of festivals take place throughout the year to mark traditional values. Guid Neighbours is the main festival and celebrates community spirit.
