Gatehouse of Fleet is a village situated near the mouth of the Water of Fleet. Traces of its industrial past can still be found in its buildings and street names, and in the Mill on the Fleet, a former textile mill which is now an award-winning visitors centre tracing the history of Gatehouse. Other local historical attractions are Cardoness Castle, a late 15th-century fortified tower house, and the ruins of Anwoth Church with its atmospheric graveyard.
There are several shops and a grocery shop in the village, and a variety of places to eat out. Gatehouse provides opportunities for a variety of activities, including golf, walking, cycling, fishing and sailing. Port Macadam, once the harbour, is still used by small pleasure craft. Garries Park is central to Gatehouse of Fleet. Beaches near the town can be found at Carrick and Sandgreen. The Cream O Galloway is a major visitor attraction. The area supports many interesting species of wildlife. Above all, this is a peaceful beauty spot in which to relax and unwind.
