Thirsk is a very popular tourist destination being a traditional North Yorkshire Market town in the Vale of Mowbray between the stunning North York Moors and the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Cod Beck river runs through the centre. Famous for its race course, 15th Century Church and Thomas Lord, Thirsk is also the ‘Darrowby’ of the late James Herriot (Alf Wight), the famous vet and author. The cobbled market place dates from medieval times and is still the centre of commerce. Most of the shops are still around the market place extending north up Kirkgate to "The World of James Herriot", Thirsk Museum and the spectacular 15th century church, St Marys. Thirsk market days are Mondays and Saturdays and aren’t to be missed!
