Holmfirth is a charming town in the Holme Valley of West Yorkshire, which grew from a corn mill and bridge in the 13th century, before rapidly expanding 300 years later due to the growing cloth trade and local quarries. Once also a centre for pioneering film-making; between 1973 and 2010, Holmfirth and the Holme Valley became well known as the filming location of the BBC's Last of the Summer Wine, the longest running sitcom in the world. Tourists still visit the area each year to enjoy the scenery and locations from the series. Holmfirth has many terraced stone-built cottages which are typical of this area of West Yorkshire. Narrow, steep alleyways, known locally as ‘ginnels’ provide short cuts between the former weaver's cottages. The stone steps are well worn from centuries of workers making their way to the mills and factories, which were the hub of the area's textile industry. The town has plenty of local shops including a small supermarket, bookshops, tearooms and cafés. A farmer's market takes place every third Sunday in the month, selling organic and local produce. Holmfirth is also close to the northern fringes of the Peak District National Park for outdoors activities and sight-seeing.
