A little information about Northumberland

The beautiful county of Northumberland is the northernmost county of England, bordering Cumbria to the west, County Durham and Tyne and Wear to the south and Scotland to the north. To the east is the spectacular North Sea coastline. Northumberland is the most sparsely populated county in England. Lying on the Anglo-Scottish border, the county is famous for being the site of a number of battles. The county is also renowned for its beautiful wild landscapes of high moorland, now largely protected as the Northumberland National Park with landscapes that are perfect for outdoor activities, with everything from walking and cycling, to fishing and wildlife watching.

Northumberland has arguably England’s most tranquil National Park, two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and many nature reserves waiting to be explored. Visitors to this county are spoilt for choice with an abundance of attractions and activities to choose from. Stay beside the seaside and explore miles of golden sandy beaches, enjoy fantastic freshly caught seafood and take in the unrivalled views. Enjoy major food festivals taking place in Alnwick and Berwick in September, against the exquisite back drop of Northumberland’s landscapes. Home to Europe’s largest International Dark Sky Park, it is the ideal place to discover the night skies.

Of course, there's the world famous Hadrian's Wall, Roman Britain's biggest building project that still dominates the county's landscape almost 2,000 years after it was constructed. Visit the historic Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the Northumberland Coast, or if you are a lover of gardens and grand stately homes, you should visit The Alnwick Garden, Howick Gardens & Arboretum and Cragside Estate to name but a few. Woodhorn Museum & Northumberland Archives is home to a fascinating exhibition on the mining heritage of Northumberland. Museums and galleries can also be found within many of our great castles and along Hadrian's Wall. Northumberland contains a treasure trove of delights waiting to be discovered!
