Lynton is a small town on the north coast of the county of Devon, situated within Exmoor National Park. The area is known as Little Switzerland due its breathtaking scenery, with high cliffs crashing down to the sea. The town itself has a range of cafes, pubs, tearooms, shops and accommodation and is a great base for exploring this wonderful area of the country. Visit the Lyn and Exmoor Museum in St Vincents Cottage, the Town Hall or Valley of Rocks Hotel. Lynton is closely located next to the harbour village of Lynmouth, and these are connected by the Lynton and Lynmouth Railway. The Valley of Rocks lies half a mile from the town and is a popular tourist attraction. It has interesting geological features to be explored, along with its herd of feral goats.
Running through the town is the famous Tarka Trail. It is also a haven for walkers who frequent the famous South-West Coastal Path, the Two Moors Way, Samaritans Way and the Coleridge Way. Lynton provides everything for the walker and cyclist with great accommodation, well-signposted routes and excellent transport links in and around the area. Exmoor is wonderful open space with moorland and woodland with some of the best walking and cycling in the country. See the magnificent red deer or the wild Exmoor ponies. The novel Lorna Doone by RD Blackmore was famously based in this area.
