This historic county town of Dorchester was the Durnovara of the Romans and the fictional Casterbridge of the Thomas Hardy novel. The town has a busy shopping centre, a flourishing market and has many lovely Georgian buildings. Have a walk round Poundbury, an extension to Dorchester, built on the principles of architecture and urban planning as advocated by The Prince of Wales in A Vision of Britain. Visit Maiden Castle, the huge Iron Age hill fort just outside the town, and take a drive to the stunning Jurassic Coast.
