Abergavenny is a market town in Monmouthshire, known as the Gateway to Wales, found approximately 6 miles from the border with England. A bustling market town with Roman origins in a beautiful setting; there are 7 hills surrounding Abergavenny and it is a great base for exploring the Brecon Beacons National Park. Visit the 11th and 12th century ruins of Abergavenny Castle and explore the museum which is housed in the lodge atop the Norman motte. St. Mary’s Priory Church houses a splendid Medieval carving of Jesse, father of King David. Next door to the church is the Tithe Barn, which is a tourist information centre. Visit the Market Hall where weekly markets are held on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Food Festival in September each year is internationally famous. Abergavenny has many outdoor activities such as pony trekking, mountain biking and fishing. In the surrounding area are many fine medieval castles, churches and priories, plus the World Heritage Site at Blaenavon.
