Cockermouth is an ancient market town in Cumbria, where the River Cocker flows into the River Derwent. Lying just outside the boundary of the Lake District National Park, it is perfectly placed between the mountains of the Lakes and the tranquil Solway Coast. Cockermouth is one of only 51 towns in Great Britain designated as a Gem Town, making it part of our national heritage. Dorothy and William Wordsworth were born in the town and the Georgian house in Main Street where they were born is now in the care of the National Trust. The Lakeland Sheep and Wool Centre is a popular attraction and Jennings Brewery has been part of Cockermouth for over 170 years. Take a tour and sample Original Brew, Cumberland Ale and even some Snecklifter! Cockermouth has many interesting independent shops and the main shopping area is comprised of Main Street, Market Place and Station Street. There are well-stocked local butchers, bakers, greengrocers and fishmongers. There is also a wide selection of antique and gift shops, a book shop and numerous cafes, inns and restaurants.
