Hotels, Guest accommodation, Self Catering & Camping in Kirkcudbright
Kirkcudbright (pronounced Kir-koo-bree) is a pretty town in Dumfries and Galloway, 25 miles from Dumfries, surrounded by picturesque coastline and beautiful countryside. The name comes from Kirk of St Cuthbert, reflecting the towns early importance as an ecclesiastical centre. Nowadays, it is known as the Artists Town. The light and colours of this historic harbour town make it a haven for artists and tourists alike. Kirkcudbright itself is on the estuary of the River Dee, and there is Dhoon Beach to enjoy, a mile or two along the coast. The beach is great for bathing and has views of the lighthouse on Ross Island.
Kirkcudbright is a pleasure for anyone interested in buildings and attractive townscapes. The High Street is unusual, being wrapped around two sides of the core of the town and not actually forming a main thoroughfare. Here, you find the Tolbooth Art Centre and the court building which includes the Old Town Jail. Each year, a wide range of events are held including the Kirkcudbright Jazz Festival, Country Fair, Arts and Crafts Trail and Riding of the Marches. A vibrant summer programme of entertainment culminates in the Floodlit Tattoo, complete with massed pipe bands.
