Newton Stewart is a bustling town in Dumfries and Galloway, south-west Scotland. An excellent destination for a short break or holiday, it is known as Gateway to the Galloway Hills. Newton Stewart is also a hub for the large rural area known as the Machars. The A75 runs along the southern edge of the town, and connects the town to Stranraer in the west and Dumfries in the east. The main local industries are agriculture, forestry and tourism. The town hosts a local market, has an 18-hole golf course, cinema, tennis courts, a museum and green and carpet bowling. It offers a wide variety of shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants.
The town is on the River Cree with most of the town to the west of the river. The River Cree gives access for salmon anglers, while trout and coarse fishers are provided for in the local burns and lochs. Sea angling is available from both shore and boat. There are many mountain biking trails in the area. Newton Stewart lies on the southern edge of the Galloway Forest Park, the largest in Britain with 300 square miles of forest, moorland, lochs and peaks. There is a wealth of wildlife, such as red and roe deer in the forest and hills, while wild goats thrive on the rocky slopes. The film The Wicker Man was filmed almost entirely on location around Newton Stewart.
