Canterbury is a cathedral city brimming with history and heritage. Ancient Roman walls encompass its medieval centre with cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. There are many historical buildings including Canterbury Cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Head of the Anglican Church. St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church, together with the cathedral, form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See the Norman Canterbury Castle and the medieval Westgate, the last surviving Gatehouse in England. The River Stour flows through the city and you can hire a boat, canoe or punt. Other attractions include Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales Visitor Attraction, Beaney House of Art and Knowledge, the Roman Museum, Howlett’s Wild Animal Park and Blean Woods Nature Reserve. There are a wide range of pubs and eateries, and for shopping, Canterbury’s Whitefriars hosts high street names, while the King’s Mile, Westgate and St Dunstan’s offer specialist and independent shops. Canterbury is less than an hour from London St Pancras by train.
